Art in Nature

NOTHING INSPIRES ART LIKE NATURE

San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy harnesses that inspiration with programming that gets people creating in the outdoors. Through the years, Art in Nature sessions have explored painting, drawing, crocheting, photography and journaling.

We’re always trying something new.

Our partnerships make Art in Nature is great.

So far, our programs and partners have included:

PAINTING

Ilan-Lael Foundation

Who better to lead watercolor workshops than the Ilan-Lael Foundation? The legacy of the late James Hubbell—watercolorist, architect and sculptor—lives on as staff from the foundation lead Art in Nature sessions at Conservancy events or at Ilan-Lael, a compound near Julian where Hubbell lived and worked.

WILDLIFE JEWELS

Birds, mammals and reptiles are just some of the jewels of the San Dieguito watershed. Wildlife Jewels is a charity on a mission to protect wildlife. One of its activities is to lead sessions in which participants “paint the jewels” of nature.

PAINT 'N' SIP

We brush acrylic onto canvas and drink of the wine. Under the guidance of painter Melody Wagner, participants render acrylic impressions of the lovely landscapes that surround Speckle Rock Winery overlooking the San Pasqual Valley.

DRAWING

Drawing is Seeing. That’s the name of the Art in Nature program and is the mantra that underpins the lessons Sue Britt brings to the outdoors. Britt coaches to students to slow their minds and really see the nature that surrounds them.

CROCHETING

Call it Crocheting with a Porpoise. A hands-on workshop led by Ocean Connections invites participants to create crochets of creatures from under the sea.

JOURNALING

Observations of the landscape flow through eyes, mind and pen and land onto the paper pages in words and sketches. Laura Chaing and Alaric Lopez facilitate the free-flow and quiet contemplation. The instructors show that nothing links participants to nature quite link recording their observations on the page.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Experienced photographers from the River Park and Conservancy lead outings in which participants hone their skills in observation, composition and visual storytelling. You never know who or what might find its way into the frame of an Art in Nature photographer!
