Fire Recovery Fund

The Witch Creek fires in October 2007 dramatically affected the River Park and the work of The Conservancy. Not only did the burn area cover over 60% of the River Park’s 80,000-acre Focused Planning Area, but the River Park lost offices, equipment, vehicles, bridges and more – which we are working hard to raise funds for to replace and rebuild.

In addition to meeting the immediate needs of the River Park, the impact of the fires present long-term challenges like erosion control and rebuilding trails. To address these needs, we have established a detailed Fire Recovery Action Program. We are working closely with biologists and other technical experts to determine the best use of resources during the recovery phase, including mapping intact habitat areas, identifying priority areas for revegetation and aggressive control of invasive species.

Although the road to recovery will be a long one, we are hopeful about nature’s ability to heal – and confident about the efforts we can take to aid in the process.
