CORRAL MOUNTAIN

  • Northern backdrop to Lake Sutherland, northeast of Ramona

  • Site offers transition--north-to-south--from chaparral to native grassland to oak woodlands

  • Conservancy purchased 243 acres to preclude development within large public ownership

  • Citizen funding for purchase permits Conservancy to sell habitat credits – with funds available for use for other purchases

  • Vegetation burned in 2007 Witch Creek Fire – natural recovery expected

Location & Access

  • North slopes of Lake Sutherland, north off State Route 78 at Sutherland Dam Road, 7 miles northeast of Ramona

  • Parcels purchased were in-holdings within lands owned by City of San Diego Water Department

  • Property abuts Cleveland National Forest to west

  • Mesa Grande Reservation Housing lies below off Blank Canyon Road

  • Property closed to general public access – plans are for side-trail link when Coast-to-Crest Tail is extended to Lake Sutherland

  • Conservancy conducts member-only hikes on mountain and on adjacent property purchased east of Lake Sutherland

Resource Values

  • Completes major area of public ownership with habitat connections eastward to 5,400 acre Santa Ysabel Ranch and westward to Pamo Valley, Boden Canyon and San Paqual Valley

  • Prevents development, which in turn protects the watershed

  • South facing chaparral, with upper native grassland and diverse oak forest on northern slope

  • Majestic stand of Englemann oaks

  • Rare gabro soils and native grasses

  • Panoramic views of Lake Sutherland, westward to Rancho Guejito, and east to the Lagunas

Conservancy Role

  • Conservancy purchased with funds from members and donors

  • Property was advertised “for development”

  • Conservancy selling mitigation credits on the property, the returns from which will be re-invested in purchase of additional properties, such as on Volcan Mountain

Management & Related Work

  • Conservancy manages property

  • General public access will be planned as side trail to extension of Coast-to-Crest Trail from Boden Canyon to Lake Sutherland

  • Conservancy negotiating the sale of additional mitigation credits, the proceeds from which will be available for additional land purchases

  • Road access to property is gated and very remote

  • Conservancy conducts guided hikes to area

  • Planned extension of Coast-to-Crest Trail will run to southern edge of the property
