HISTORY OF THE CONSERVANCY

In 2007, the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy celebrated its 20th Anniversary. The Conservancy created in 1986 by a group of citizens from Solana Beach and Del Mar was instrumental in the establishment of the River Park, completed its first acquisition in 2001, and began a program to accelerate development of the Coast-to-Crest Trail in 2007.

1986 Conservancy formed by small group of citizens from coastal area and Rancho Santa Fe
1989 Conservancy successfully supports establishment of Joint Powers Authority (JPA) a multi-governmental agency to implement and manage River Park
1994 First Currents Newsletter published
1996 10th Anniversary celebrated with increase in membership from original 10 to 350
1997 Conservancy initiates Environmental Education and School Mini-Grants Program
1998 Conservancy members contribute $200,000 to match national foundation grant for Volcan Mountain protection
2000 Conservancy members contributed funding ensuring purchase of 5,400 acre Santa Ysabel Ranch
2002 Conservancy and JPA purchase 232 acres of undeveloped Bernardo Mountain raising $600,000 in 2 moths for $4.1 million purchase
2003 Conservancy membership of more than 1,000
2005 Conservancy raises local funds and state grants for purchase of Lake Sutherland East
